UV lamp for terrarium
The reptile lamp is a special lamp with an internal coating that modifies the spectral composition of UV radiation. The spectrum is subdivided into UV-B and UV-A, they help reptiles absorb calcium in the form of food additives or staple foods. Calcium is essential for reptile growth and strengthening bone tissue. For example, for the formation of turtle shells and more generally for the healthy growth and development of these young animals.
Reptiles need it to feed their young and lay strong, healthy eggs. Without sufficient calcium in the body, structural and sometimes irreversible changes can occur. Limb fractures are possible, as well as softening or deformation of the shell. Vitamin D3 is produced in reptiles under the influence of UV light.
How does a UV lamp work on turtles and other reptiles?
The recommended daily light hours for reptiles (approximately 12 hours) under the influence of UV light aid in the production of vitamin D3. It builds and strengthens bone tissue, and its presence in the animal promotes calcium absorption. The fact is that vitamin D3 is practically not present in the food consumed.
Feeding special foods high in calcium and using vitamin D3 supplements is sometimes a futile exercise, as absorption without UV rays is not possible! Aquatic turtles are an exception - vitamin D3 is present in the animals they eat, fish, frogs, etc., but exposure to UV rays is still vital for them.
