Terrarium layout
To create comfortable conditions for reptiles, as close as possible to their natural habitat, the terrarium should be decorated with various elements to recreate a " micro-landscape ." This is why the substrate is very important. It regulates the temperature and humidity of the air and serves as suitable bedding for our animals.
The substrate is chosen individually for each reptile. A dry substrate is necessary for xerophilous reptile species, while more tropical reptiles and amphibians require a moist substrate.
The type of soil and its purpose:
- Sand: Suitable for desert animals (snakes, lizards).
- Sawdust: A natural substrate, ideal for dry-loving reptiles. It can be used in low-humidity terrariums, as otherwise the sawdust rots quickly.
- Tropical tree bark: mulch that retains moisture very well. Ideal substrate for terrariums with insects.
- Moss, coconut chips, peat: ideal for animals that like humidity.
- Clay: Absorbs moisture well but does not humidify the air well. Suitable for desert animals.
